The Nordic Scholarship Program is an initiative of the Nordic Africa Institute for students pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research.

The scholarship covers travel expenses, accommodation and a subsistence allowance. In addition, it also includes an access to a workspace in a shared office at the Nordic Africa Institute.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Nordic Africa Institute’s Nordic Scholarship Programme.

Through the Nordic Scholarship Programme, NAI aims to contribute to building capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa, and to promote and establish relations with and between Nordic research communities.

If you are a student or researcher engaged in Africa-focused studies at a University in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland, the Nordic Scholarship Programme gives you the opportunity to visit NAI for one month.

Eligibility Requirements for Nordic Africa Institute Scholarship 2026

To be considered for the Nordic Africa Institute Scholarship, you must:

    • You must be a master student, PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher in the social sciences or humanities.
    • You may apply regardless of citizenship, but you must be affiliated to a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland.
    • You must be pursuing Africa-oriented studies/research.

Benefits of Nordic Scholarship Program 2026

  • The scholarship covers travelling expenses for the least expensive fare from residential address (in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland) to Uppsala and return.
  • The scholarship holders are provided with a desk and computer in a shared office at the Institute and free accommodation centrally located in Uppsala.
  • The scholarship also includes a subsistence allowance of SEK 400 per day and free photocopying up to a maximum of 1,000 copies.
