In Rwanda, ForAfrika delivers synergistic interventions across Education/ECD, WASH, Food Security & Livelihoods (FSL), Economic Empowerment (including VSLA digitalisation), and Health & Nutrition. Programming emphasises locally led solutions, government alignment, and strong systems for financial stewardship and compliance.

Position Summary

The Driver provides safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for ForAfrika Rwanda staff, visitors, and materials. This position is responsible for the proper care and maintenance of assigned vehicles, ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and organizational policies. The Driver supports programme implementation by facilitating field travel and logistics, contributing to the overall operational effectiveness of the organization.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Transportation Services (40% of effort)

  • Provide safe and timely transportation for staff, visitors, and authorized personnel to designated locations
  • Transport goods, materials, equipment, and documents as required for programme activities and office operations
  • Plan travel routes efficiently, considering traffic conditions, road safety, and fuel economy
  • Ensure punctuality for all scheduled trips, meetings, and airport transfers
  • Provide transportation support for field visits to programme sites across Rwanda
  • Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage and materials
  • Maintain professional conduct and ensure passenger comfort during all trips

2. Vehicle Maintenance & Care (25% of effort)

  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections including fuel, oil, water, tyres, brakes, lights, and other essential components
  • Ensure the assigned vehicle is clean, both interior and exterior, at all times
  • Monitor vehicle condition and promptly report any mechanical issues, damages, or maintenance needs
  • Coordinate with authorized garages for scheduled servicing and repairs as approved
  • Ensure timely renewal of vehicle insurance, road tax, and inspection certificates
  • Maintain vehicle tools, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and emergency equipment in working condition
  • Ensure the vehicle is securely parked in designated areas when not in use

3. Safety & Compliance (15% of effort)

  • Adhere strictly to Rwanda traffic laws, road safety regulations, and organizational driving policies
  • Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts and follow vehicle safety protocols
  • Maintain a valid driving license and ensure all vehicle documents are current and available in the vehicle
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or traffic violations immediately to the supervisor
  • Follow security protocols and guidelines, especially during field travel
  • Avoid unauthorized passengers and ensure vehicle use is strictly for official purposes
  • Abstain from alcohol and any substances that may impair driving ability

4. Administrative Support (10% of effort)

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbook recording all trips, mileage, and fuel consumption
  • Submit fuel receipts, maintenance invoices, and other vehicle-related expenses promptly
  • Complete trip request forms and obtain necessary approvals before undertaking journeys
  • Prepare monthly vehicle reports including mileage, fuel usage, and maintenance records
  • Assist with basic office errands including bank runs, post office visits, and document deliveries
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and conversations during official duties

5. Logistics Support (10% of effort)

  • Support procurement activities by collecting quotations, picking up supplies, and delivering materials to vendors
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and proper handling of programme materials and equipment
  • Coordinate with programme teams to support field activity logistics and material distribution
  • Assist in organizing transport logistics for workshops, trainings, and organizational events
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support organizational operations

Success Measures (indicative KPIs)

  • Zero accidents or safety incidents attributable to driver negligence
  • 100% compliance with traffic laws and organizational driving policies
  • Vehicle maintained in good condition with timely servicing and minimal breakdowns
  • All trips completed on time with positive feedback from passengers
  • Vehicle logbook and documentation accurately maintained and submitted on time
  • Fuel consumption within acceptable range demonstrating efficient driving practices
  • Valid vehicle documents and licenses maintained at all times
  • Prompt reporting of incidents, maintenance needs, and vehicle issues

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Secondary school certificate (O’Level) minimum; additional education or vocational training advantageous
  • Valid Rwanda driving license (Category B minimum; Category D/E preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of professional driving experience, preferably with NGOs or international organizations
  • Clean driving record with no major traffic violations or accidents
  • Good knowledge of Rwanda road network, traffic regulations, and driving conditions
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge and ability to perform minor repairs
  • Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends
  • Good communication skills in English and Kinyarwanda; French advantageous
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for logbook maintenance and documentation
  • Physical fitness to handle loading/unloading and long-distance travel

Desirable

  • Defensive driving certification or advanced driving training
  • First aid certification
  • Experience driving 4×4 vehicles in rural and challenging terrain
  • Previous experience in humanitarian or development organizations
  • Basic computer literacy

Travel & Work Environment

Based in Kigali with regular travel within Rwanda to field sites and programme locations (up to 70%). The role requires flexibility to work outside normal office hours when necessary for official assignments.
