About the Internship Program

The African Union Internship Program offers young professionals and students from AU Member States the opportunity to gain practical work experience and exposure within the AU’s departments and directorates.

This program aims to:

  • Complement academic learning with hands-on professional experience.

  • Strengthen personal and professional competencies.

  • Foster intercultural learning and teamwork across Africa.

  • Serve as a platform for nurturing future African leaders.

Interns will work full-time and contribute to ongoing projects, research, and administrative tasks while learning about AU operations.

Focus Areas

Interns will be placed across multiple AU Departments and Directorates, including but not limited to:

  • Cabinet of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson

  • Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy & Sustainable Environment (ARBE)

  • Economic Development, Trade, Industry & Mining (ETIM)

  • Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI)

  • Political Affairs, Peace & Security (PAPS)

  • Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS)

  • Human Resources Management (HRM)

  • Infrastructure & Energy (IE)

  • Information & Communication

  • Women, Gender & Youth (WGY)

  • Legal Counsel, Protocol, Strategic Planning, Internal Oversight, and many others.


Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the AU Internship Program, applicants must:

  • Be nationals of an AU Member State.

  • Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree or have obtained a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field.

  • Be aged 32 or below at the time of selection.

  • Be fluent in at least one AU working language (English, French, Arabic, or Portuguese).

  • Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and good conduct.

  • Have no criminal record.

  • Prior work experience is not required.


Terms and Conditions

  • The AU does not provide financial support—all travel, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility.

  • The internship duration is three (3) months, renewable once.

  • AU will assist with entry and residence visas where applicable.

  • Interns must have valid medical insurance throughout the program.

  • No compensation or travel allowances will be provided.


Required Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email/internet tools.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

  • Fluency in at least one AU working language (additional languages are an advantage).

  • Motivation letter explaining what they hope to gain from the internship

  • Valid passport or national ID

  • Certified academic certificates

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Recommendation letter from their academic institution

After submission, applicants will receive an email confirmation acknowledging receipt.
