About the Fellowship

The International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) in Indonesia, administered by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) with support from the Indonesia–U.S. Friendship Foundation, provides a unique opportunity for U.S. mid-career professionals to engage with Indonesia’s dynamic political, economic, and social environment.

Fellows live in Indonesia for three to twelve months, conducting independent research, collaborating with local institutions, and building networks that enhance their professional work in foreign policy, academia, or civil society.


Who Should Apply

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be U.S. citizens.

  • Be mid-career professionals with a proven record of achievement.

  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree.

  • Demonstrate professional excellence and interest in U.S.–Indonesia relations.

Note: This fellowship is not for academic degree programs or long-term projects already in progress.


Duration & Financial Support

  • Fellowship duration: 3 to 12 months, depending on the project.

  • Stipend: Up to US $110,000 for a full 12-month term (prorated for shorter stays).

  • Includes a travel grant.

  • Fellows are considered independent contractors (no employment benefits).

  • CFR assists with placement in Indonesian host organizations aligned with each fellow’s project goals.


What Fellows Do

Fellows immerse themselves in Indonesia’s professional and policy landscape by:

  • Conducting independent research on Indonesia’s politics, economy, or U.S.–Indonesia relations.

  • Producing analytical outputs such as reports, policy briefs, and articles.

  • Collaborating with local think tanks, NGOs, universities, or government agencies.

  • Building cross-cultural networks and engaging with policymakers and institutions.

This is a full-time, in-person fellowship, typically requiring on-site work at least three days per week.


Selection Criteria

Only one or two fellows are selected each year. Candidates are evaluated based on:

  • Academic and professional achievements.

  • Strength and feasibility of the project proposal.

  • Relevance to Indonesia and U.S.–Indonesia relations.

  • Cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills.

  • Career impact and leadership potential.

Preference is given to applicants who have not previously received a CFR fellowship.


Application Timeline

  • Application Window: September 15 – October 31 (annually).

  • Notification: By January 30 of the following year.

Required Application Materials:

  • Biographical, educational, and professional details.

  • A strong project proposal with proposed placement(s).

  • Two letters of support.

Applicants are encouraged to coordinate with potential host institutions in Indonesia before submitting their application.
