The Graduate School of the Cluster of Excellence “Understanding Written Artefacts” (CSMC) at the University of Hamburg invites applications for DAAD-CSMC PhD Scholarships under the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The scholarship covers 3 years of fully funded doctoral studies starting 1 January 2026.
About DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organisation for international student and researcher exchange. Since 1925, over 3 million scholars in Germany and abroad have benefited from DAAD support. DAAD works to internationalize German universities, promote German studies and language abroad, and fund research excellence.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:

Be highly qualified, motivated international candidates (non-German citizens)

Preferably be from the Global South
-
Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to the study of manuscript cultures or written artefacts
-
Have English language proficiency (B1 or higher)
Not Eligible:
-
Applicants who already have a PhD or have completed substantial parts of their doctoral studies elsewhere
-
Applicants whose Master’s degree was awarded more than 6 years ago
-
Applicants who have lived in Germany for 15+ months by November 2025
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit one PDF file with:

Research Proposal (max 5 pages) with abstract, proposal, and 3-year work plan (in 3-month intervals)

CV (with education, professional experience, publications, language skills)

Letter of Motivation (1 page) describing career goals and fit with the doctoral programme

Copies of academic certificates (Bachelor, Master, other relevant degrees)

Letter of Recommendation from a professor (DAAD template recommended)

Proof of English proficiency (B1 or above)

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of principal investigators. Selection is based on:
