Job Title: Legal Intern & lawyer
Position Overview
Hengtian Attorneys is to providing high-quality legal services for Chinese invested company in Rwanda. We are looking for a sharp, ambitious Legal Intern & lawyer to assist our legal team in delivering excellence to our clients. This job is designed for candidates who are passionate about the practice of law and are eager to learn the intricacies of Rwandan courtroom procedures, commercial arbitration, and regulatory advisory.
Key Responsibilities
1. Investment & Corporate Advisory (FDI Support)
- Assist in providing legal guidance on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) procedures in Rwanda, supporting clients from the initial startup phase to the completion of their investment plans.
- Coordinate with senior counsel to advise clients on the acquisition of Investment Registration Certificates (IRC) and Company Registration through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
- Facilitate the preparation and submission of documents for company incorporation, changes in business registration (restructuring), and social insurance registration (RSSB).
2. Regulatory Compliance & Government Liaison
- Conduct legal research and assist in providing advisory on the Law Governing Companies, Law on Investment Promotion, Tax Law, Labor Law, Real Estate and the Civil Code, including relevant Ministerial Orders and Regulations.
- Liaise professionally with government officials at the RDB, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), and other relevant ministries to follow up on client dossiers and resolve administrative bottlenecks.
- Support the implementation of administrative procedures and ensure all filings are compliant with current Rwandan statutory requirements.
- Client Advisory: Draft legal opinions for clients on labor disputes, contract draft and review, land law and etc.
3. Immigration & Expatriate Services
- Assist in the application process for Investment Visas, Work Permits, and Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) via the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE).
- Advise foreign clients on the legal requirements for residency and employment of expatriate staff under the Rwandan Labor Law.
4. Legal Research, Drafting & Analysis
- Perform comprehensive legal research and draft legal briefs, memoranda, and opinions on diverse legal issues requested by clients.
- Draft and review commercial contracts, agreements, and other legal documents under the supervision of the senior lawyer.
- Participate in client consultations and legal briefing sessions to provide updates on new laws, decrees, or judicial decisions affecting business operations in Rwanda.
5. Litigation support and Court Attendance
- Litigation Support: Assist in drafting court documents, including pleadings, summons, affidavits, and submissions for the Commercial Court, High Court, and Intermediate Courts.
- Court Attendance: Accompany senior advocates to court hearings, take detailed notes, and assist in managing case files and evidence during proceedings.
6. Administrative Support
- Administrative Support: comply with supervisor instruction to fulfill the tasks based on Supervisor instruction or guidance.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Academic Background: * Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university.
- Technical Proficiency: * Experience using the IECMS (Integrated Electronic Case Management System) is a significant advantage.
- Licensed advocate is preferred.
- Language Skills: * Full professional proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda.
- High ethical standards, professional integrity, and attention to detail.
- Effective interpersonal skills to build trust with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and prioritize multiple cases effectively.
