Within the Fund for the Promotion of Innovations in Agriculture (i4Ag) under the BMZ initiative “Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems,” GIZ implements the measure:
“Sustainable Mechanization of Value Chains through Innovative, Gender-Sensitive Business Models.”
This project, jointly implemented with Volkswagen and the Machinery Rings Foundation, focuses on innovative, sustainable mechanization and energy solutions. In Rwanda, the project supports smallholder farmers and cooperatives in adopting sustainable mechanization solutions, piloting innovations (e.g., electric tractors), and developing scalable farmer-led service models.
Position Details

Location: Kigali, with frequent travel to Gashora, Bugesera

Duration: 6 months (fixed term)

Responsibilities
The intern will work closely with the Commission Manager and technical team to:
-
Support implementation of project activities under the Sustainable Mechanization Project.
-
Assist Volkswagen in technical activities related to electric tractors and innovations.
-
Help organize stakeholder consultations, demonstrations, field days, and workshops.
-
Contribute to Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and data collection.
-
Provide technical support in crop and soil management during mechanization trials.
Tasks
-
Support project planning, coordination, and reporting (M&E, communication, documentation).
-
Assist Machinery Rings in capacity-building programmes, including training and field demos.
-
Collect and analyze field data for agronomic reports and recommendations.
-
Support Volkswagen in identifying agricultural value chains and services for the Empowerment Hub.
-
Update and maintain GIZ’s monitoring platform, ensuring data accuracy.
-
Provide logistical and technical support for workshops, events, and partner coordination meetings.
Qualifications, Competences & Experience
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree (graduated within the last 12 months) in Agricultural Mechanization, Crop Production, Agricultural Sciences, or related fields.
-
Final-year students or awaiting graduation are also eligible.
Experience:
-
Knowledge of agricultural mechanization, crop production, or value chain development.
-
Familiarity with Rwanda’s agricultural sector and mechanization challenges is an asset.
Other Skills:
-
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
-
Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
-
Ability to work in a multicultural, international team.
-
Strong written and oral communication in Kinyarwanda and English (French is an advantage).

Willingness to conduct regular fieldwork in Gashora and work from Kigali.
