About the Program:
Since 2017, Boston University’s Global China Initiative (GCI) Fellows Program has supported over 40 pre- and post-doctoral fellows, providing opportunities to engage with research, collaborate with BU faculty, and connect with institutions in the Global South.

Program Highlights:

• Fellows paired with faculty mentors aligned with one of four research streams:
  • Data Analysis for Transparency and Accountability (D.A.T.A.)
  • Forestry, Agriculture, and Indigenous Rights (FAIR)
  • Energy & Climate
  • China & the International Financial Architecture (CHIFA)

• Time commitment: ~20 hrs/week on GCI projects + ~20 hrs/week independent research

• Produce 1 working paper during the fellowship year

• Full-time in-person at Boston University, with stipend for research, travel & professional development

Who Should Apply:

• Pre-doctoral candidates: must have completed qualifying exams & defended proposal

• Post-doctoral candidates: dissertation defended by August 2026

• Strong research interest in China’s overseas economic engagement

• Preferred: regional knowledge of Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia; Chinese language skills; research in climate, finance, development, mapping; strong quantitative/modeling skills
