The Great Lakes Region (GLR) Cluster addresses cross-border challenges such as responsible resource governance, sustainable supply chains, conflict prevention, and women’s participation in peace and security.


Role Overview

The Communication Specialist will design, implement, and coordinate strategic communications for the GLR Cluster. This includes content development, media engagement, digital communications, and stakeholder coordination to amplify the cluster’s work across the region.


Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Communication & Content Development

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that translate complex research into accessible narratives.

  • Create multimedia content: policy briefs, reports, social media campaigns, newsletters, videos.

  • Manage GIZ’s digital presence and ensure consistent messaging.

2. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provide technical support and advice on communications to partners.

  • Build strong relationships with media, civil society, and government communication teams.

  • Coordinate messaging across multiple projects and partners.

3. Capacity Building & Other Tasks

  • Train project staff and partners on communication tools and methods.

  • Manage service providers (designers, translators, editors).

  • Support additional tasks as requested by management.


Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, or similar (Master’s preferred).

  • At least 7 years’ experience in communications (3 years in international development or regional contexts).

  • Proven expertise in media relations, crisis communications, and digital content management.

  • Strong writing, analysis, and messaging skills (English & French – C2).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, and digital communication tools.

Additional Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

  • Experience working in politically sensitive or conflict-affected settings.

  • Culturally sensitive and collaborative approach.
